VIS Motorsport 2.0 TFSi EA113 Balance Shaft Freewheel Deactivation Sprocket – VISBSDFW

The VIS Motorsport freewheel is without doubt one of the most popular modifications for the EA113 2.0 TFSI engines, dealing with a common issue and helping to prevent future failures it has well earned its place fitted in thousands of VW, Audi, Seat & Skoda models all over the world!

Removing the rotating mass of the OEM balance shafts frees up a few extra horsepower, makes your engine rev faster and helps to prevent oil starvation keeping your engine healthy for longer. The simple removal of the factory cog for a VIS freewheel provides a small performance gain, but the much bigger gain comes from a decrease in rotating mass of the engine. By removing weight that your engine has to spin, it becomes easier for it to rev.

However, the main benefit and reason most look at fitting a VIS freewheel is to deal with the TFSI engines well documented weak point, Its counter-rotating balance shafts. The purpose of the balance shafts when the engines were designed is good, they are there to remove vibrations. However over time on this engine they can fail and cause all kinds of issues with the oil pump assembly that all result in engine failure. What is an oil pump? Quite simply, it’s the single most important mechanical component in making sure every crucial moving part of your engine is properly lubricated, no matter how hard you drive. Getting oil to your engine’s moving parts reduces friction to an all-but-harmless level. There’s always some friction, which is why engines wear out, eventually... But without proper oil flow from a good condition oil pump, your engine is toast before you know it – very expensive toast. Its well documented that going from having a warning light appear on the dash and then suffering complete engine failure if you dont turn the car off straight away can mean you go from a running and driving car to a seized engine incredibly quickly!

That’s where the VIS freewheel really shines, by removing the factory cog and fitting the VIS ‘freewheeling’ cog, you deactivate the balance shafts externally from being able to rotate without having to remove them physically. Then the oil pump chain can spin without extra resistance, massively reducing the risk of the oil pump chain, tensioner or the pump itself failing, causing catastrophic engine failure.

There are other alternative ways of deleting / deactivating the balance shafts, the well documented 1.8T 20V oil pump mod is a tried and tested method but this requires a lot more modification and work to fit, including drilling and tapping oil lines into the block of the engine. Another method is with a fully machined oil pump balance shaft assembly where the shafts are removed.

What else should i consider doing at the same time as installing a VIS freewheel?

The factory cog the freewheel replaces sits inside the engine oil sump, so it goes without saying that to get to this cog you have to remove the sump. When doing so you will need to drain the engine oil. Subsequently we tend to recommend that you time fitting a freewheel with doing an engine oil service at very least, as putting old engine oil you have drained out back into the engine feels counter productive.

Whilst you have the sump off, its also worth changing the oil pickup pipe that attaches to the balance shaft assembly itself. This oil pick up pipe has a built in strainer that can get blocked up with debris and can then also cause oil pump issues, we always recommend to change them when you have the sump off.

Please Note...

- The VIS Freewheel replaces the weaker OEM VAG part number 06F105243C.

- The freewheel is manufactured from heat treated steel, with an SKF/TIMKEN shielded deep groove radial ball bearing, the biggest that can be fitted, to enable the freewheeling portion of the delete!

- It is important to check the original crankshaft gear before installing!

- The VIS Freewheel comes with a 12 month warranty against manufacturing defects and will prevent failure of the oil pump cog in future.

- WARNING -This part is designed and intended for competition use only. It should not be installed on a vehicle that is driven on public roads and highways. Installation of this part on a vehicle driven on public roads and highways is likely to violate laws and regulations relating to motor vehicle emissions
